They added FAQ schema everywhere. They broke pages into chunks. They restructured H2s as questions. They published cluster pages. <strong>Each piece of advice was correct in isolation. None of the pieces talked to each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What the standard checklists don\u2019t tell you is the part that actually breaks timelines \u2014 <em>which page to optimize first<\/em>, what to do about the page next door that\u2019s covering the same topic, and how to know whether any of this is working week-over-week without an AI Search Console that doesn\u2019t exist yet. Citation comes from the combination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measure citation movement<\/strong>, not traffic. They tell you what to do <em>to<\/em> a page \u2014 add schema, restructure headings, write a TL;DR. Useful, but incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>Citation visibility doesn\u2019t come from a single page. People ask AI long, conversational, multi-turn questions with task-oriented intent. They Google short keywords with navigational intent. If you optimize for the Google query, you miss the AI prompt entirely.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>To do<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify the AI platforms your audience already uses. Check GA4 for referral traffic from <code>chatgpt.com<\/code>, <code>perplexity.ai<\/code>, <code>gemini.google.com<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>List the actual prompts your audience asks across the buying journey \u2014 <strong>branded and unbranded<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Benchmark your visibility vs. up to 10 competitors per topic across <em>at least three<\/em> AI platforms.<\/li>\n<li>Prioritize the prompts where competitors are cited and you\u2019re not. A brand mentioned consistently across the web \u2014 Wikipedia, top industry pubs, Reddit, Quora \u2014 cites more often than a brand only present on its own domain. Before you optimize content, you need to know what AI sees when it looks for you.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>To do<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Search your brand name in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini. <em>Read what they say.<\/em> Note inaccuracies, missing context, and outdated information.<\/li>\n<li>Check brand consistency: same name, same logo, same tagline, same NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across every property.<\/li>\n<li>Audit your Wikipedia entry. If you don\u2019t have one and you\u2019re an established brand, <strong>that\u2019s a priority gap<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Pull your existing brand mentions across the web. Six steps, structured so that each can be run on a single URL at a time.<br>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"step4\">Step 4 \u2014 Build topical breadth and depth<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wsc-block wsc-definition\" role=\"note\"><span class=\"wsc-label wsc-label--light\">Definition<\/span><p class=\"wsc-definition__term\">Why this matters<\/p><p class=\"wsc-definition__body\">AI systems use query fan-out: they break a single user question into multiple sub-queries and pull sources for each sub-query in parallel. A shallow page covering 12 subtopics in one paragraph loses to a structured hub of in-depth cluster pages.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>To do<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>For each priority topic, build <em>one<\/em> pillar page summarizing all facets at a high level.<\/li>\n<li>For each facet, build a cluster page covering that facet in depth (1,500\u20133,000 words minimum, no padding).<\/li>\n<li>Cross-link cluster pages to each other where contextually relevant. Link every cluster back to the pillar.<\/li>\n<li>Cover informational, commercial, and comparative intent in the cluster. <strong>Comparison pages cite heavily in AI answers<\/strong> \u2014 don\u2019t skip them.<\/li>\n<li>Find questions to answer in your content using Keywords Explorer, People Also Ask, support tickets, and sales call transcripts.<\/li>\n<li>Build an SEO topical map that extends beyond keywords into related entities and concepts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"pros-cons-flex\"><br>\n<div class=\"pros-cons-box\"><h3 class=\"pros-heading\">Do<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>One concept per cluster page. SE Ranking found that domains with strong community presence are cited 4\u00d7 more often than those without. Most B2B teams treat these as \u201csocial\u201d channels and ignore them. That\u2019s leaving citation share on the table.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"geo-card\">\n<div class=\"geo-card-header\">\n<h4>4.
