Our story

A Story of Rebuilding, Rethinking and Redefining What Is Possible

The moments, milestones and mindset shifts that shaped who we are, and that led to the creation of Wellows.

Fourteen years, one Google penalty, and a full pivot to AI. The whole thing, chapter by chapter.

Phase 1

Rise and Resilience

Chapters one to four. An affiliate business built on curiosity, a Google penalty that took it to zero, and the playbook we wrote so that nothing after it was accidental.

Chapter 1 · 2011 to 2012

First Steps, Lasting Impact

Back in 2011, trading then as Webaffinity, we stepped into the digital world driven by passion and a simple idea: people needed genuine recommendations and reliable product reviews. We spotted a clear gap in the online tech affiliate market and it gave us the direction we needed. Users were actively looking for guidance on products, reviews and detailed guides, the kind of insight competitors kept overlooking.

Like other industry players at the time, we focused on keyword volume rather than user intent. Our content ranked consistently, a strategy that fitted inside Google’s less complex guidelines of that era, and it generated targeted traffic and steady revenue. Six months in, the site reached 50,000 monthly visitors. By month eight, monthly revenue had climbed to $10,000. With only a few people on board, we knew we had found a formula that worked.

The data was clear: content tuned to what people were actually searching for converted well above what we were seeing elsewhere in the category. That early success was only the beginning. Search algorithms operated with limited precision in those days, and our profitable trajectory was about to meet a challenge that would demand real resilience.

What we got right

  • Identified the Gap

Recognised the unmet demand for trustworthy tech reviews.

  • Achieved Early Reach

Attracted 50,000 monthly visitors within six months.

  • Achieved Revenue Goals

Passed $10,000 in monthly revenue by month eight.

  • Converted Above Category

Content tuned to real search intent outperformed what we were seeing elsewhere.

Chapter 2 · 2013 to 2014

100% Profit to Zero Overnight

Ever watched everything you built vanish overnight with no idea how to get it back? In 2013, Google sent a brief and devastating message to our Search Console: “Manual Penalty Applied.”

Since the early 2000s, Google has used human reviewers to check sites against its guidelines. One of them reviewed ours. Our visibility collapsed instantly, profits dropped to zero, and we were left staring at traffic graphs in disbelief. We were beginners and genuinely did not know what we had done wrong. Structured learning barely existed, so we worked it out by hand: thousands of links reviewed, content rewritten, user experience rebuilt, and proposal after proposal asking Google to reconsider.

We analysed 19,767 URLs, contacted more than a thousand domain owners for link removals, and filed disavow requests for thousands more. Google’s response was silence. After a full year we made the call to rebuild, launching new domains with everything the year had taught us. Then came the irony: just as the new sites found their footing, Google quietly lifted the penalty on the original. By then it was too late. That site had lost its magic, and the lesson would go on to shape everything after it.

What we faced, and what we learned

  • Lost It All Overnight

A sudden Google penalty erased our profits and our visibility, with no clear reason given.

  • Learned by Doing

With no guidebook we analysed 19,767 URLs and asked for reconsideration one domain at a time.

  • Heard Nothing Back

Months of effort met silence, which forced us to let go and move on.

  • Started Over Wiser

We rebuilt from scratch, this time with hard-won lessons that shaped everything that followed.

Chapter 3 · 2015 to 2020

The Playbook

By the time Google lifted the penalty, the original site had lost its spark. We had already moved on. We launched new affiliate sites and survived on the steady, recurring profit from the ventures we started in 2012.

Every tough moment became a lesson. Rather than leave future growth to chance, we documented each insight and used those steady profits to build “The Playbook.” It was not a record of the past. It was our blueprint for repeatable success.

Every small win and every hard-earned insight went into it, turning resilience into routine and making our growth intentional rather than accidental. One question stayed open: could The Playbook keep up as we levelled up?

The insights that shaped how we grow

  • Act Without Waiting

When the penalty hit we did not pause. We launched new sites and kept moving.

  • Use Profits Wisely

Revenue from earlier wins gave us the room to rebuild smarter, with focus and a longer view.

  • Turn Struggle Into Strategy

We documented every painful step and turned it into a repeatable system for growth.

  • Build for What Is Next

Instead of clinging to the past, we built a playbook that prepared us for the future.

Chapter 4 · 2021 to 2023

Scaling Up: The Team Growth Challenge

By the time we entered 2021, The Playbook was ingrained in our culture and consistently driving repeatable success. Rapid growth then exposed new problems. Processes needed structure, operations needed clarity, and scaling needed like-minded people. Every time we applied the Playbook we got the same predictable result, and that consistency gave us the confidence to scale harder than we had before.

Our biggest hurdle was talent. Finding passionate people who shared our DNA was not easy, so rather than wait we built our own pipeline and launched the first Affiliate Academy. Following the Playbook approach we documented every training session, captured the insights and built an internal LMS. Real-time feedback shaped each session. Over 100 team members joined, closely aligned with our vision and our values. By 2022 the growing team needed sharper operational visibility, so we introduced “Brain,” our internal tracking system.

Brain became our operational compass, recording content production, page indexing, keyword rankings and sales performance in one place. Decisions got faster and more evidence-led. Projects that had taken 40 hours took 12. Monthly content went from 100 pieces to more than 1,000, and from a single language to a global, multilingual audience. Inspired by HubSpot, we built our own “Growth Flywheel” in 2022, where each optimisation fed the next. Revenue grew 71 per cent in 2021, 69 per cent in 2022 and 23 per cent in 2023.

That systematic approach changed how we worked with clients, with our own systems absorbing the complexity. We had cracked scaling across process, culture and people, and productivity climbed. Success brings its own surprises, though, and we were about to find out whether we were ready for the next one.

How we grew smarter

  • Launching the Academy

Built a talent pipeline with 100+ recruits through our in-house Affiliate Academy.

  • Building “Brain”

Created an internal system that turned messy operations into streamlined, data-led action.

  • Cutting Time, Boosting Output

Reduced project hours from 40 to 12 and scaled monthly content ten times over, from 100 pieces to more than 1,000 in multiple languages.

  • Becoming a Top-Tier Partner

Systematised performance across our affiliate partnerships until the results were repeatable.

Phase 2

AI Adaptation: A Bold New Direction

Disappearing is not in our DNA. We chose adaptation. We chose AI. And with that choice began the boldest and most uncertain chapter in our story.

Chapter 5 · Oct 2023 to Jan 2024

Shaken, Not Defeated: The Hard Pivot

January 2024. An uncomfortable silence filled our all-hands after we announced that we were going all in on AI. The questions came fast. Were our jobs at risk? Could machines really replace human creativity? Did we even have the technical capability? Truthfully, we did not have answers.

So we did what we do best and went back to square one, the way we had in the early days: exploring, questioning, learning quickly. Uncertainty was familiar territory, but this time the stakes were higher. It was another first-step moment, and it forced us to rediscover both curiosity and courage.

We experimented carefully, testing ideas, discarding assumptions and moving into territory none of us had mapped. There were days we questioned whether the pivot was even possible. What carried us was the thing underneath it all: resilience, exploration and adaptability. We embraced the uncertainty again, determined to be reshaped by it rather than defeated by it.

Steps that shaped our hard pivot

  • Faced the Fear

Acknowledged the doubt, the discomfort and the unknown openly, in front of the whole team.

  • Returned to First Principles

Set assumptions aside and went back to the basics of curiosity, learning and testing.

  • Chose Courage Over Certainty

Moved forward without all the answers, on resilience and belief in the direction.

  • Started the Exploration

Began experimenting with AI to reimagine creative work through smarter workflows.

Chapter 6 · Jan to Oct 2024

All-In on AI: Braving the Leap

January 2024 marked our leap into the unknown. We were not simply adopting AI, we were engineering a complete transformation, and it felt oddly familiar, powered again by uncertainty, curiosity and determination.

Our biweekly “Let’s Talk” sessions became the place to challenge ideas and name the pain we felt as marketers ourselves: fragmented workflows that ate hours, automation tools that promised efficiency and delivered complexity, rising operating costs, and too many disconnected platforms. We knew what inbound marketers faced because we had lived it. The mission got clear: give marketers back their time, their creativity and their confidence.

To sharpen the vision we ran intensive closed-door sessions until clarity arrived. Whiteboards filled, debates got passionate, and slowly an idea began to show through the noise. In October 2024 we finished KIVA, our AI SEO agent and the first product to come out of the pivot. The vision was bold and the leap was complete. Now we had to find out whether the world would leap with us.

Turning bold ideas into real change

  • Redefined the Mission

Shifted focus from tools to transformation, empowering marketers rather than replacing them.

  • Created Space to Think

Used “Let’s Talk” sessions to surface real pain points and shape meaningful solutions.

  • Aligned Through Action

Held deep strategy sessions to cut through the noise and build with a shared direction.

  • Finished KIVA

In October 2024 we completed our AI SEO agent, ready for its first users.

Chapter 7 · Nov 2024 to Jan 2025

Speed and Feedback Become the Superpower

In December 2024 we opened the KIVA beta. Nervous and optimistic, we put it in front of 100 early users and hoped they would see what we saw. The feedback was immediate and electrifying. Testimonials came in quickly, and users praised KIVA for its depth, its ease of use and its efficiency.

Momentum accelerated after a standout launch on Product Hunt, where KIVA took second position as Product of the Day. Every comment, every testimonial and every suggestion during the beta period became our compass, shaping rapid improvements and sharpening the vision further.

Then we opened it up. More than 3,000 people signed up once the beta doors came off, and with that validation behind us we knew exactly what came next: launch Wellows to the world.

  • Listened and Learned

Used every piece of feedback to refine and improve quickly.

  • Product Hunt Spotlight

Took second place as Product of the Day, which brought the community with us.

  • 3,000+ Sign-ups

Early believers validated the direction and powered the next step.

Chapter 8 · Jan 2025 onwards

Light at the End of the Tunnel

From our first days as Webaffinity to launching Wellows, this has always been a story about embracing change. By January 2025 we had found something genuinely transformative. AI unlocked automation we had not thought possible, turning manual, time-heavy work into flows that ran themselves, and it hit the exact pain points we had felt firsthand as marketers.

We knew we were the right people to build Wellows because we had lived these problems ourselves, gathering lessons across decades of collective experience. That insight became the backbone of the product, and it gave us the name: Wellows, drawn from “Fellows,” because the job is to be a genuine partner in our clients’ growth.

At last we had answers to problems we had understood for years but could only now solve. It was our second chance, and proof that adversity can be the thing that sparks the breakthrough.
